Born in Kronberg im Taunus, Martin Schreier began making short films at an early age during his primary school years. He deepened his visual effects skills at the German Film School in Berlin before studying feature film directing at the prestigious Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. During his studies, his academic excellence earned him several scholarships, including attending the Hollywood Masterclass at UCLA in 2009.
In 2010, his short film The Night Father Christmas Died received a nomination for the Student Academy Award (Student Oscar). He followed this with the Pro7/Sat.1 Primetime Award for his graduation thriller Robin Hood (2013), which premiered as the opening film at the Max Ophüls Film Festival.
In 2016, Schreier directed Unsere Zeit ist jetzt for Warner Bros., a genre-blending biopic and comedy centered on rap artist Cro, co-starring and produced by Til Schweiger alongside the late Tom Zickler. His collaboration with Zickler led to his third feature, Traumfabrik (2019) – a grand homage to cinema and the first in-house production by Studio Babelsberg in over 25 years, released in theaters across the US, UK, China, and worldwide.
Since 2021, Martin has partnered closely with Amazon MGM Studios, directing One Night Off (Prime Video's first German original feature) and helming the global phenomenon Maxton Hall – The World Between Us. The show became the most successful non-English original series in Amazon Prime Video's history, securing the #1 spot in more than 120 countries worldwide with both Season 1 and Season 2.
An in-depth look behind the scenes: Martin Schreier reflects on his filmmaking beginnings, the path to the Student Oscar, career milestones, and directing the worldwide phenomenon Maxton Hall.
